چکیده

An experimental study of the post-impact spreading of liquid droplets on dry horizontal substrates is presented in this paper. The drop spreading and recoil behaviors are captured using a high-speed digital video camera at 2000 frames per second. To ascertain the effects of liquid interfacial and viscous properties, experiments were conducted with five liquids (water, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerin, and acetic anhydride). A range of drop Weber number from 20 to 120 was considered by altering the height from which the drop is released. Effects of liquid properties on droplet spread-recoil dynamics were determined by comparing the results of liquids with different surface tension but similar viscosity and vice versa. The high-speed photographs of impact, spreading and recoil are shown and the temporal variations of dimensionless drop spread and height are provided in the paper. Results show that changes in liquid viscosity and surface tension significantly affect the spreading and recoil behavior. For a fixed Weber number, lower surface tension promotes greater spreading and higher viscosity dampens recoil. Also, spread, recoil and shape oscillations were more pronounced on a hydrophobic substrate (Teflon) compared to those on a hydrophilic substrate (glass). A detailed comparison of maximum spreads observed in the experiments with those obtained using spread correlations available in the literature show significant differences. Limitations of the available correlations are discussed in the paper. Corresponding author

Interfacial effects on droplet dynamics in poiseuille flow

Many properties of emulsions arise from interfacial rheology, but a theoretical understanding of the effect of interfacial viscosities on droplet dynamics is lacking. Here we report such a theory, relating to isolated spherical drops in a Poiseuille flow. Stokes flow is assumed in the bulk phases, and a jump in hydrodynamic stress at the interface is balanced by Marangoni and surface viscous fo...

Experimental Investigation of Flooding and Drop Size in a Kuhni Extraction Column

In this research, Sauter-mean drop diameters and the flooding behavior have been investigated experimentally in a pilot scale Kühni extraction column. The experiments were carried out in the absence of mass transfer for two different standard chemical systems. In the experiments operating parameters including agitation speed, flow rate of both liquid phases and interfacial tension have been stu...

An Investigation on the Effects of Gas Pressure Drop in Heat Exchangers on Dynamics of a Free Piston Stirling Engine

This paper is devoted to study the effects of pressure drop in heat exchangers on the dynamics of a free piston Stirling engine. First, the dynamic equations governing the pistons as well as the gas pressure equations for hot and cold spaces of the engine are extracted. Then, by substituting the obtained pressure equations into the dynamic relationships the final nonlinear dynamic equations gov...

Viscoelastic effects on drop deformation in steady shear

This paper applies a diffuse-interface model to simulate the deformation of single drops in steady shear flows when one of the components is viscoelastic, represented by an Oldroyd-B model. In Newtonian fluids, drop deformation is dominated by the competition between interfacial tension and viscous forces due to flow. A fundamental question is how viscoelasticity in the drop or matrix phase inf...

Interfacial forces and Marangoni flow on a nematic drop retracting in an isotropic fluid.

Nematic-isotropic interfaces exhibit novel dynamics due to anchoring of the liquid crystal molecules on the interface. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the consequences of such dynamics in the flow field created by an elongated nematic drop retracting in an isotropic matrix. This is accomplished by two-dimensional flow simulations using a diffuse-interface model. By exploring the c...
